Journal of the Elephant Managers Association
The Journal of the Elephant Managers Association (JEMA) is EMA's flagship publication and is produced in three issues per year. JEMA publishes original reports and news items of interest to elephant professionals and enthusiasts. We accept submissions for consideration from EMA members and non-members alike. JEMA encourages submissions that report original elephant research, advances in elephant husbandry, accounts from the field, updates to policy or legislation that affects elephants, and other elephant-related miscellany.
Submissions are accepted year-round, with deadlines on February 1, June 1, and October 1 each year. We aim to publish JEMA in March, July, and November to correspond with each of the respective submission deadlines.

To submit a manuscript or other material, please email email@example.com. Supported formats include Microsoft Word files (.doc or .docx, preferred) and portable document format files (.pdf). There is no suggested word limit for submitted material, although longer manuscripts may be separated into consecutive issues at the discretion of the editors. We strongly encourage authors to submit photos with their manuscripts. All illustrations, graphs, and photos should be accompanied by a short, descriptive caption and a credit to the photographer. Graphics should be sent as separate attachments; you may also embed or insert them into your manuscript file, but please also send them separately. When appropriate, literature should be cited in the text and in a bibliography or works cited section at the end of the manuscript.
All material submitted to JEMA will be reviewed for publication by the editorial team, and if appropriate, the EMA Board of Directors. If accepted, all efforts will be made to be published in the upcoming issue, but no such commitment is made to the author.
Editors provide grammatical and structural revisions during the review process. Each author will receive an edited proof of their work for final approval for publication. If author approval or suggested modifications are not communicated in a timely manner by the deadline described in the confirmation email, the edited manuscript will appear in the final publication.
We appreciate the financial support of advertisers who wish to promote their products and services in JEMA. To inquire about placing an ad in an upcoming issue of JEMA, please contact EMAboard@elephantmanagers.com.
Gray Matters is EMA's member newsletter and is published six times per year in even-numbered months. Gray Matters publishes breaking news and timely information related to the elephant profession, member accomplishments, conservation updates, and EMA activities and events.
We consider submissions from EMA members and non-members for publication in Gray Matters. Submissions are accepted year-round, with deadlines for upcoming issues on February 1, April 1, June 1, August 1, October 1, and December 1.
